After Break – Plurals

  1. Students write the following note:

To form the plural of most nouns we simply add –s. However, they are some exceptions. For example, we only add –s to words that end with ‘y’ and ‘o’ the letter before them is a vowel, e.g. by and zo. So when words end in ‘y’ or ‘o’ we have to look at the letter that comes them so know if it’s okay for us to only add –s to make them plural.

 

Forming Plural Nouns by Adding –es

To form the plural of word that end in s, ch, sh, x and z, we add -es. In addition, the plural of words that end in ‘o’ that have a vowel before the ‘o’ are also formed by adding -es.

 

Change Before Adding -es

There are some times when we have to make a change to a word before we add –es to make it plural. When a word ends in ‘f’ or ‘fe’ we first have to change the ‘f’ or ‘fe’ to a ‘v’ and then we can go ahead and add –es. For example, loa = loa and wi = wi. We also have to change the ‘y’ to an ‘i’ and then add –es if the letter that comes before the ‘y’ is a vowel. Example: ba = bab
